Research

In addition to its scientific benefits, research promotes faculty retention and program stability. Research places the institution in the vanguard of new discoveries, leading to expanded services and clinical leadership. Together, these benefits can deliver increased financial return.

Through their status as Columbia HeartSource clients and their use of the HeartSource database, all Columbia HeartSource Community (CHSC) affiliates contribute clinical information that can be used for research as well as practice oversight. Participation in larger clinical trials is available to those patients who qualify.

Columbia's Section of Cardiac Surgery runs a robust program of biomedical and device-oriented clinical trials supported by industry, government, and nonprofit grants. Insights gained from these activities have been widely disseminated in the medical community and have provided the impetus for new technological developments in the field.

CHSC affiliate faculty are invited to participate in Columbia's clinical trials and basic research and to join Columbia's accredited continuing medical education programs. These collaborations engender academic and promotional partnerships for the HeartSource client.

The groundbreaking Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass (OP-CAB) study was the work of surgeons from several institutions, including those from Columbia and Columbia HeartSource Community (CHSC) affiliates.

The findings of the study, which compared beating heart surgery off-pump to conventional open heart surgery on-pump, showed that coronary revascularization can be safely performed on the beating heart with no increase in short-term complications. These findings have impacted practices at Columbia and its CHSC affiliates with excellent outcomes.
